Gmail Goes Offline With Google Gears

Gmail Labs have introduced a new concept of Ofline email which uses Google Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you're connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail's servers. This feature will be very useful to users who have less internet but use emails extensively. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer's hard drive of the information sent across the network. And if you're on an unreliable or slow connection (like when you're "borrowing" your neighbor's wireless), you can choose to use "flaky connection mode", which is somewhere in between: it uses the local cache as if you were disconnected, but still synchronizes your mail with the server in the background.
Offline Gmail is an experimental lab feature, which is made available to everyone who uses Gmail in US or UK English over the next couple of days, so if you don't see it under the Labs tab yet, it should be there soon. Once you see it, just follow these steps to get started:
  1. Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
  2. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
  3. Click Save Changes.
  4. After your browser reloads, you'll see a new "Offline0.1" link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don't already have it.

Google M Lab – New Internet Saviour

Google today unveiled Measurement Lab (M-Lab), an open platform that researchers can use to deploy internet measurement tools which can detect internet errors. When an Internet application doesn't work as expected or your connection seems slow, how can you tell whether there is a problem caused by your broadband isp, the application, your PC, or something else? It can be difficult for experts, let alone average Internet users, to address this sort of question today. Due to lack of a comprehensive set of tools available today to counter these issues,Goole the initiative (as always) and introduced M-Lab.

Over the course of early 2009, Google provide researchers 36 servers in 12 locations in the U.S. and Europe. All data collected via M-Lab will be made publicly available for other researchers to build on.It is a community based effort,so call it an Orkut developers :) .

Following features are currently provided by M-Lab as of now -

  • Diagnose common problems of internet which might low internet.
  • Check whether bit torrent blocked by their ISP or not.
  • Get information about their connection and provide researchers with valuable aggregate data

and more..

As of now these tools are in their first phase of evolution and will mature into a great piece of code with time.

You can learn more at the M-Lab website.

How do I get rid of kesenjangansosial.exe?

Q: How do I get rid of the KesenjanganSosial.exe adware error?

A: The kesenjangansosial.exe program is a known part of several infections — viruses, adware, malware, etc. To stop the error that you have been experiencing, use respected security software to run a full scan of your entire computer. Do not be fooled by Microsoft’s Windows Defender program, which is built into Windows Vista, is not powerful enough to remove most infections. You will need to use security software that is more powerful.

My favorite security software for Windows-based computers is Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Other respected security brands, some of which offer great free software, include: Avast, AVG, McAfee, Norton, and ZoneAlarm. Each security program has its own unique method for deleting infections; consult with the manufacturer of your security software for exact instructions.

Removing infections from your computer is important. But I strongly urge you to consider that even the best security programs cannot remove all of the negative effects that infections often leave behind. The best solution for fixing infected computers like yours is to reinstall Windows, using the following procedure:

  1. Run respected security software to delete all infections from your computer.
  2. Continue by creating backups all of your important files, internet favorites, email contacts, etc. You should save your backups to CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives, and/or external drives.
  3. Next, disconnect your infected computer from the internet.
  4. With an uninfected computer, download and make a CD of the free GWSCAN utility. Then use GWSCAN to “write zeros” to your computer’s hard drive. Writing zeros will totally erase all files from your computer — including viruses and other security threats.
  5. Now, reinstall Windows using either a Windows installation disc or system recovery disc(s). If you cannot find such discs, contact the manufacturer of your computer to obtain them. To prevent your computer from becoming reinfected, do not use the built-in recovery tool that comes in some computers, nor any system recovery disc(s) created by your computer after infection. Do not reconnect your computer to the internet yet.
  6. If you use broadband internet (cable, DSL, etc.), your modem/router may also be infected. Contact your internet service provider, and ask their representative how to reset your modem/router to factory settings — sometimes called a “hard reset”. Then ask the representative how to make your modem/router as secure as possible.
  7. Next, reconnect your computer to the internet and apply all Windows security updates.
  8. Then install security software and run a scan of your entire computer, to confirm that your computer is indeed free from all infections.
  9. You’ve successfully reinstalled Windows! Finally, reinstall all of your favorite programs and copy your backup files to your computer.

Tip: Windows is less secure than other major operating systems. Although infections are increasingly targeting non-Windows systems, most experts still consider Mac OS X and Linux to be vastly superior to Windows in terms of security. Regardless of operating system, you should always use good antivirus & firewall programs to protect your computer.

The menus are missing in Internet Explorer 7!

Q: I have Windows XP Home Edition and Internet Explorer 7. My question is this: How do I unhide the Menu Bar in Internet Explorer 7, so that I can see File, Edit, Tools, Favorites and the other options that were on top in earlier versions of Internet Explorer?

A: Microsoft has begun hiding the Menu Bar in popular programs such as Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer, and has removed the Menu Bar entirely from Microsoft Word 2007 and some other software. In Internet Explorer 7, you can unhide the Menu Bar by going to the upper-right corner and single left-clicking on the Tools button. Then put a checkmark next to the Menu Bar option.

Tip: In Windows Media Player 11, you can unhide the Menu Bar by using the Layout Options button (next to the search area).

Recover lost files after restoring my computer to factory settings

Q: I recently had a problem with my Dell Dimension 4700 desktop. I followed instructions given to me by Dell’s paid support service, only to discover that following Dell’s instructions had reset my computer back to factory settings and erased all of my files! Could you recommend the best software to try and recover it my music, photos, and documents?

A: It may be possible to recover some or even all of your lost data. I recommend that you download & install a free data recovery program called Recuva.

An interactive wizard will appear when you start Recuva. The first time you run Recuva, I recommend that cancel the wizard so that you can change some settings in the main program. Single left-click on the Options button in the main Recuva program. Then go to the Actions tab and put a checkmark in every checkbox; putting a checkmark next to the Restore folder structure option should tell Recuva to automatically organize recovered files on your computer. Now that you’ve changed these settings, close Recuva.

Launch Recuva again, and this time run the wizard. The wizard includes all necessary instructions. Good luck recovering your lost files. Let me know if this helps.

Tip: Create regular backups of your important computer files using CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, external hard drives, USB flash drives, etc.
